Company Introduction
HistoryClaro M. Recto Avenue (formerly Azcarraga Street), which is the main pathway leading to Mendiola Bridge towards Malacanang Palace, has been the perennial site of the democratic struggles of the Filipino people for good governance or otherwise. It is likewise the place where Rex Book Store (RBS) had its new beginning after the previous store was razed to the ground after a conflagration destroyed everything except for one unblemished prayer book, Jesus, Save Me, which gave the Fonteleras and the Buhains the will to go on. The year 1950 marked the organization of RBS into a corporate entity, Rex Book Store, Inc. (RBSI). It began publishing law books. Three years later, they ventured into textbook publishing, starting with high school titles and thereafter, pre-elementary and elementary textbooks. Its sister company, Rex Printing Company, Inc. (RPCI) was established in 1973 to cater to the printing needs of the ever-growing publications. Over the years, RBSI has put up branches nationwide. These are strategically located in the following key areas: Cebu (1986), Shaw (1989), Makati and Davao (1991), Iloilo (1993), Cubao (1994), Cagayan de Oro and Urdaneta (1997), Legaspi City (1998), Rockwell and Cavite (1999), General Santos City (2000), Cabanatuan and Pampanga (2001), and Tacloban (2002). Now steadily, in the new millennium, RBSI operates on five different publication domains manned by highly skilled and competent marketing associates who take care of the company’s diverse clientele. These divisions are as follows: the Educational Materials Division (EMD) for private school textbooks, the Government Materials Division (GMD) for public school textbooks and reference materials, the Tertiary Materials Division (TMD) for college textbooks, the Legal Materials Division for law books, and the Nontextbook and Reference Materials Divisions (NRMD) for children’s books, trade books, and nonreference materials. To date RBSI is happy fusion of an innovative management team and top-notch production, marketing, operations professionals, and Filipino authors and writers who ceaselessly reinvent themselves for the further improvement of the company’s product lines and services. The end result is empowered educators, learners, and readers in all levels all over the archipelago. From being an ordinary bookstore, which was engaged in buying and selling secondhand books in the historic street of Azcarraga, it has increased its distribution outlets across the nation thus making the product lines of RBSI accessible to a great number of Filipinos. Parallel to the survival and growth of RBSI, two sister companies – RPCI (with its integrated and updated printing facilities) and Rex Publications, Inc. (for leisure publications) – were organized in 1973 and 1978, respectively. In 1973 as well, the Rex Commercial Division was organized to respond to the printing needs of the quality-conscious clientele. In 1994, the Rex Oasis of Arts and Culture (ROAC) was established to help develop the arts and preserve our cultural heritage. Collectively, they form the REX GROUP OF COMPANIES, which has for its primordial purpose the enhancement of the dignity of the Filipino people among the family of nations by publishing and printing quality educational, trade, and leisure publications to satisfy domestic and international demands by responding to the rigid printing requirements of quality-conscious clientele while helping develop the arts, unveil and preserve our rich cultural heritage.
