MACCAFERRI does not only have a long history dating back to the 19th Century, but is a history itselfon its revolutionary development and contributions to preserving the environment. It was 1879 when Raffaele Maccaferri first set up an ironworks company known as "Ditta Maccaferri Raffaele Officina da Fabbro".
The first breakthrough came in 1893 when Maccaferri invented one of the first structures for river bank protection - sack gabions. This was applied to a very important and historical project, the Reno River in Italy. It took 650 workers 34 days to install 2,900 gabions, a record for those times. Until today, more than 100 years later, these gabion structures are still in place. The successful application of Maccaferri gabions prompted the Italian Government to adopt this type of solution for the reinforcement of land and river bank protection.
