Duties and Responsibilities:

Section Administration and Management

Administers effective work delivery of department personnel according to set rules and policies of the health facilityEnsures the quality and accuracy of all examination performed in the laboratory.Prepare work schedule for Medical Technology staff every week.Check the availability of equipment and supplies needed in the laboratory and ensure all machines and equipment are in good operating condition.Prepare monthly, semi-annual, and annual census of laboratory test requested by each doctor in each section of the laboratory.Prepare and submit Monthly Income Report of the department

Laboratory Functions

Blood Banking

Check if request has complete data such as name, age, sex, clinical diagnosis, attending physician, required components, and reason for cross matching.Prepare solution for cell was such as 8.5% Normal Saline Solution.Perform interviewing and screening of donors for Hemoglobin and Hematocrit, Malaria Smear, HbsAg and Hepatitis C virus for hepatitis, Rapid Plasma Reagin for Syphilis and HIV for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome virus.Withdraw blood sample from donors for screening and possible blood collection.Perform Phlebotomy to donors who passed the interview and screening test.Check and properly label the blood bags containing collected blood for storage.Explain clearly and properly to the relatives of the donor the Blood Bank’s Policy regarding voluntary blood donation and replacements of blood used by the patient.Records and keeps files of all successful donors.Records and keeps files of all deferred donors and reason for deferral.Operates Sorvall 3C Cell Operator, a refrigerated centrifuge which separates desired blood components for specific use like packed red blood cell, platelet concentrate, fresh frozen.Monitors proper temperature, calibration and maintenance of different machines and equipment used in blood bank like the Blood Bank Refrigerator for the whole blood and packed red blood cell storage, Ultra Low Freezer for storage of fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate, Serofuge for plasma and serum separation and for doing the cross matching procedure , Plasma Separator for separating  plasma from packed red blood cell and Refrigerated Centrifuge for blood components separation.Performs cross matching procedures using Broad Spectrum Compatibility Testing using patient serum against donor’s red cellsPrepares an aliquot of blood sample from donor’s blood bag for washing using Serofuge. This is designed to perform cell washing, cell re-suspension and cell agitation.Performs antibody testing using direct control panels of known cells.Performs blood ABO and Rh typing using commercially prepared anti-sera and reverse blood grouping using manually prepared known cells.Performs quality testing for all anti-sera used in blood grouping.Performs Direct and Indirect Coomb’s test.Records and releases all the results of Blood Banking Tests.Keeps record of all the available blood components, its extraction date, expiration date and all the necessary data for future reference.Properly disposes the used needles, syringes, satellite tubes, and expired blood.Disinfects and washes workplace and equipment used in the procedure.

Clinical Chemistry

Perform, controls, and establishes the ranges of all chemistry tests daily and as the need arises.Troubleshoots the machines and equipment when needed.Check specimen and laboratory requests for completeness of the dataPrepare reagents and materials needed for processing and analyzing.Centrifuges blood to separate serum from red blood cellsPerforms laboratory tests using special machines and equipment.Performs the procedures which may be fully automated, semi-automated, and manual depending upon the availability of the reagents and condition of machines.Operates TC84 photometer used for clinical chemistry tests.Operates Vitros250 and Integra 400, automated machines used for clinical chemistry test.Performs Fasting Blood Sugar, Random Blood Sugar, Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, 2 hours Post Prandial Blood Sugar, and Glycosylated Hemoglobin Test in diabetes diagnosis.Performs Creatinine, Blood Urea Nitrogen, 24 hour Urine Creatinine Clearance and 24 hour Urine Protein for kidney disorders.Analyze Lipid Profile such as Cholesterol, Triglycerides, High Density Lipoprotein, and Low Density Lipoprotein.Performs Liver Function Tests such as Alanine Aminotransferase, Aspartate Aminotransferease, Total Protein, Albumin, Globulin, Albumin/Globulin Ratio, Direct Bilirubin, Indirect Bilirubin, Total Bilirubin, and Alkaline Phosphatase.Performs Cardiac Enzyme Tests such as Creatinine Kinase, Total, Isoenzymes, Troponin T, Aspartate Aminotransferase, and Lactate Dehydrogenase.Performs Amylase tests for pancreas.Performs Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Magnesium and Electrolytes tests.Performs quantitative analysis for Cerebrospinal Fluid and other aspirated fluids.Operates I-Lyte/Easylight, an automated microprocessor which is a flow-through ion selective electrode measuring machine used for determination of electrolytes such as Sodium, Potassium, and Chloride.Performs Blood Alcohol Level in serum usually done in trauma patients and for medico legal purposes.Ensures that machines and other equipment have proper maintenance and calibrated regularly.Prepares specimen for send out such as TIBC, Hepatitis Profile, FT3, FT4, TSH (IRMA), tumor markers, and other special tests not routinely done in our laboratory (specimen was kept on freezer and should have proper request).Records and releases all Clinical Chemistry results.

Immunology and Serology

Checks request if it has  complete data such as name, age, sex, clinical diagnosis, attending physician, and test required.Performs screening tests for Hepatitis such as Hepatitis B Surface Antigen, Hepatitis B, Envelop Antigen, Antibody for Hepatitis A IgM, Antibody to Hepatitis B Core, Antibody to Hepatitis B Envelop Antigen, and Antibody to Hepatitis B Surface Antigen.Performs Anti-Streptolysin O (ASO Titer), a test for streptococcal infection such as in case of rheumatoid fever and glomerulonephritis.Performs RA Factor, a test for rheumatoid arthritis. Prostate Specific Antigen, anti-nuclear antibody, complement 3, C-Reactive Protein, and others.  Prepares specimen for send out and store them properly in freezer with proper request.Performs widal test, a test for typhoid.Performs Dengue Blot, a test for Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.Performs Rapid Screening Test for syphilis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV 1 and 2 using test strip.Performs Tubex, a semi-quatitative serologic test for typhoid.Performs Troponin T, a qualitative test for myocardial infarction.Operates Axsym, a fully automated machine for Hepatitis Profile, Triiodothyronine, Thyroxin, Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, and Human Immuno-deficiency deficiency Virus 1 and 2.Prepares specimen for send out and stored them properly in freezer with proper request. This is for the examination not routinely done in the laboratory such as Prostate Specific Antigen, Anti-Nuclear Antibody, Complement 3, C-Reactive Protein, and others.Records and releases all serologic tests.

Clinical Hematology

Performs quality control for all hematology tests weekly and as the need arises.Checks patients’ requests if it has complete data such as name, age, sex, tests desired, the requesting physician, and clinical diagnosis.Operates SYSMEX KY-21, a semi-automated hematology analyzer for complete blood count , platelet count, and quantitative count of other blood indices.Perform complete blood count which comprises of hemoglobin, hematocrit , white blood cell count, red blood cell count, white blood cell differential count, stained red cell examination, and platelets.Prepares manual procedure for complete blood count if machine is not available.Quantifies the Red Cell Indices such as Mean Corpuscular Volume, Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin, Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration, and Red Cell Distribution Width.Performs Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate using the Withrobe Tube Method.Performs Peripheral Blood Smear for abnormal cells.Performs LE Cell preparation for Lupus Erythematosus.Performs and read Malarial Smear for malarial parasites.Performs Blood ABO and RH typing using known anti-sera (forward method) and known cell (reverse method).Operates Thrombotimer 4 channel, a semi-automated machine for coagulation test.Performs Prothrombin Time and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time tests for coagulation disorder.Performs Bleeding Time using Ivy’s Method.Performs Clotting Time using Lee and White Method.Performs Reticulocyte Count using unopette and reticulocyte stain.Troubleshoot machines if problem arises.Ensures that machines and equipment are regularly calibrated and maintained properly.Maintains cleanliness and orderliness in Hematology Section.Records and releases results of Hematology Tests.

Bacteriology

Checks specimen and requests for completeness of data, and logs in entry logbook.Prepares an autoclave culture media such as Blood Agar Plate, Mc  Conkey Agar, Thioglycollate, Mueller Hinton Agar, Lysine Iron Agar, Sulfide Indole Motility, Urease, Citrate, Triple Sugar Iron Agar, Chocolate Agar Plate, Salmonella Shigella Agar, Mannitol Salt Agar, Selenite Broth and Brain Heart Infusion Agar.Prepares reagents for staining.Performs Gram Staining and Acid Fast Bacilli Staining. Reads and interprets stains.Performs Potassium Hydroxide for fungal infection.Performs cultivation of accepted specimen for future work-up.Reads and classifies growth of organisms for culture.Performs biochemical tests.Performs antibiotic susceptibility testing using Broad spectrum Disk diffusion.Monitors the Incubator Temperature, an instrument wherein plates or specimen for culture are stored in a controlled temperature suitable for the organism’s growth.Performs antibiotic susceptibility testing using Broad Spectrum Disk Diffusion.Disinfects and cleans the workplace and equipment used in the procedure.Properly disposes all used media with live culture.Records and releases all bacteriology results.

Clinical Microscopy

Checks specimen and laboratory requests if the data is complete.Performs physical, chemical and microscopic examination of urine, stool and other body fluids such as Cerebrospinal Fluid, Seminal Fluid, Dialysate and other transudates.Performs the chemical examination of urine using urine test strips. This chemical examination includes pH, specific gravity, protein, sugar, bilirubin, ketones, nitrite, urobilinogen, leukocytes, and bloodPerforms occult blood to detect presence of hidden blood in stool.Performs Acid Ether Concentration Technique for better recovery of ova and parasites.Identifies parasites in stool using Normal Saline Solution and Iodine.Disinfects and maintains cleanliness in the work place.Records and releases results of Clinical Microscopy.

Histopathology

Checks request if it has complete data such as name, age, sex, clinical history, and diagnosis of the requesting physician.Records all the data in the logbook.Checks if the specimens are properly labeled and fixed.Receives, relays, and releases the results to the attending physicians.

Drug Testing

Checks if the request has complete data such as name, age, sex, required test, purpose, requesting party, and if the consent for drug testing was properly accomplished and signed up by the person concerned.Records at the receiving book the entire specimen received including all the necessary data required.Performs screening test for methamphetamine (SHABU) and cannabinoids (MARIJUANA) using test kit.Records and releases results of patients.For positive screening test sends specimen to National Bureau of Investigation or other Confirmatory Drug Testing Centers accredited by the Department of Health, together with the letter of confirmation accomplished by the examiner and noted by the Pathologist.

Qualifications:

University degree in Medical TechnologyRegistered Medical Technologist, ASCP, AMTKnowledgeable and experience in the supervision of the Laboratory Department, including supplies and equipment, principles, and procedural techniques. Monitors, screens and troubleshoots analytical devicesMinimum two (2) years  experience  as  Chief  Medical  Technologist  in   a    reputable   healthcare organizationLicensed/Certified to operate the following: Sysmex, XS-800i, Sysmex Ca-50, Sysmex Ca-500, Elecsys, Cobas H232, Bioisite Triage Meter Plus, Roche Cardiac Reader, Vitros 250, Roche 9180 Electrolyte Analyzer, easylyte Plus, Cobas c111, Cobas Integra 400 Plus, Grifols DG Therm, Bactec 950..etc
